BANGOR, Maine — McDonald’s Restaurant No. 34,252 is open for business.

Franchise owner Gary Eckmann cut the ribbon Thursday at the 427 Main St. building, which is adjacent to the former Miller’s Restaurant and nearly across the street from McDonald’s former location.

Eckmann, who has been affiliated with McDonald’s for 47 years, explained that each new McDonald’s is given a number, which is like a business Social Security number. Bangor’s first McDonald’s — on Broadway — is No. 666 and was among the first to open in the Northeast. Now, Bangor is home to the newest location, at least for the time being.

Several dozen people turned out to mark the occasion, including Karen Cole with the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce and Bangor City Councilor Cary Weston. Weston praised the Eckmann family, who own and operate several McDonald’s locations in greater Bangor, for doing business in the area for more than 25 years.

“Even though it’s a national brand, this is really a family business,” he said.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, Eckmann presented donations of $1,000 each to Bangor Parks and Recreation Department and Maine Discovery Museum.

The former Main Street McDonald’s — which is now for sale — opened in 1996, but the space became too small, according to Eckmann. The new location borders Larkin Street directly across from Tim Horton’s.

Approximately 65 people will be employed at the new Main Street McDonald’s that features the newest restaurant model, including a McCafe or coffeehouse-style area.
