BROOKSVILLE – Rachel J. Babson, 89, died July 3, 2010, at a Deer Isle nursing facility. She was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Brooksville, daughter of Fred and Phebe (Durgain) Wessel. Rachel worked side by side with her husband, Manley, digging clams, and they owned and operated a poultry farm for many years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and was an avid reader. She is survived by daughters, Claire Gray and husband, Gleason, of Sedgwick, and Jeanette Casey and husband, Richard, of Bingham; grandchildren, JoDee Lymburner of Brooklyn, N.Y., Aindrea Casey of Vienna, and Melissa Hamilton and husband, Brandon, of Norridgewock; great-granddaughter, Izabel Hamilton; daughter-in-law, Sherris L. Babson; brother-in-law, Frank Snow; sister-in-law, Katherine Clifford; and nephew, Philip Wessel, all of Brooksville. She was predeceased by her husband, Manley, in 1996; son, Frederic, in 2002; and brother, Wentworth, in 1993. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at Mount Rest Cemetery, Brooksville. Contributions in Rachel’s memory may be made to Island Nursing Home, P.O. Box 124, Deer Isle, ME 04627.
