Snowe wants freeze of NOAA expenditures

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe wants NOAA’s law enforcement branch to suspend expenditures from the Asset Forfeiture Fund until polices are implemented to guarantee there are no more abuses.

Snowe made her request in a letter to NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco following an audit of how fishery enforcement agents used millions in federal fines collected from fishermen for take-home cars, boats and travel.

The audit was commissioned by the Inspector General of the U.S. Commerce Department earlier this year after that office found mismanagement by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s law enforcement office.

Snowe is a senior member of the Senate Commerce Committee and is ranking Republican on subcommittee on oceans, atmosphere, fisheries and Coast Guard.
