AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci says the July 4th weekend is a time to celebrate all that’s good about America and its people, and to take stock of our place in its history.

In his weekly radio address, Baldacci says that after the smoke from the sparklers clears and the sound of patriotic music fades, we will return to the circumstances we face today. He says people are upset with high unemployment, the Gulf Coast disaster and discord in Washington.

But the governor says today’s troubles “will only be short passages” in the story of our country, and just as we overcame the Great Depression, we will overcome this recession.

In his address, Baldacci also expresses gratitude and respect for members of the military are serving under the harsh conditions, far from family and friends.
