Should the use of Social Security numbers be curtailed?

The recent breach of a computer system at the University of Maine’s counseling center has many people wondering why institutions like schools rely so heavily on Social

Security numbers as a means of identifying students. Should schools and colleges issue ID numbers to students in lieu of using Social Security numbers? What measures should UMaine take to prevent such breaches of security?
