LEE, Maine — A half-dozen residents helped lift a pickup truck and free a Springfield man from an accident in which a 53-year-old Springfield woman was killed on Route 6 on Thursday, state police said.

Cheryl Butler apparently died in the pickup truck, while Steven Osnoe, 52, of Springfield suffered head injuries and was being treated at Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln late Thursday, state police Sgt. Mark Brooks said.

Brooks said he didn’t know whether the passers-by saved Osnoe’s life by lifting the vehicle.

“They were able to rescue both occupants from further injury,” Brooks said Thursday.

The accident occurred when the pickup truck, which was heading toward Lee, went off the eastbound lane on a sharp curve, struck a guardrail and went into a gully shortly after 7 p.m., Brooks said.

Firefighters from the Lee Fire Department helped rescue the two pickup occupants. The accident was so severe that the cab broke away from the rest of the pickup, Brooks said. The truck had to be hauled away on a flatbed truck.

A state police accident reconstruction team was on the scene and will assist Trooper Thomas Fiske with the investigation of the accident, Brooks said. Brooks said it was too early to determine how fast the vehicle was traveling or what caused the pickup to veer from the road.

Anyone with information about the accident or the actions of Butler and Osnoe in the hours leading up to it is invited to call Fiske at 866-2121, Brooks said. All calls will be kept confidential.

Thursday’s accident was the fourth fatality in or near the Katahdin and Lincoln Lakes regions in the last 30 days.

A New Brunswick woman died June 10 from injuries she suffered in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Crystal, near the Sherman town line, when for an unknown reason she crossed the rumble strip and traveled into the median.

Two Greenbush women were killed June 15 and a third seriously injured when the car they were riding in veered off Route 2 and hit a large tree in a front yard on the northbound side of the road opposite 1268 Route 2.

Those investigations are continuing.
