PORTLAND, Maine — A man who was caught loading a rifle outside Portland High School is going to the state mental hospital under a plea agreement.

A police officer patrolling near the school in May of 2009 spotted the man outside a nearby church and arrested him in an alley behind the school.

Prosecutors dismissed the charge of attempted murder against Herbert Jones and agreed that he wasn’t criminally responsible for his actions. The Portland Press Herald says he’ll be hospitalized until a court decides he’s no longer a threat to himself or to others.

Police said Jones made reference to a pedophile inside the First Parish Church. An Alcoholics Anonymous meeting was under way inside the church at the time.
