Maine man facing pipe bomb charge held without bail

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine man accused of possessing unregistered explosives is being held without bail pending trial.

Authorities say they detonated five pipe bombs found inside Robert Infante’s car after he drove himself to a hospital Friday after blowing part of his finger off. Infante contends he was a victim of a propane blast; investigators say the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device.

The Portland Press Herald said Infante waived a probable cause and a detention hearing in federal court on Thursday and plans to challenge the evidence against him, accusing investigators of gathering it illegally.

Authorities say he is being held without bail because he poses a threat to the community and might not show up in court.
