BANGOR, Maine — The homeless man accused of taking significant steps toward but stopping short of robbing a Corinth business last month was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury for attempted robbery, failure to sign a summons and failure to give a correct name.

Jerome G. Richards II, 25, remains at the Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail set at $5,000 cash or $50,000 surety.

Richards, who is unemployed, also has been charged in Somerset County with violating his probation.

He is scheduled to be arraigned July 13 at the Penobscot Judicial Center on charges related to the attempted robbery. Richards is scheduled to appear July 9 in court in Skowhegan.

Richards was arrested June 1 by Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies after an off-duty Maine state trooper observed him walking across a credit union parking lot in Corinth wearing what looked like a mask over his face and black latex gloves. The trooper followed the car in which Richards was a passenger until deputies pulled the female driver over on Route 15.

Deputies found Richards was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt backward with two holes cut in the hood for his eyes, according to reports obtained from the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office. Deputies also found two pellet guns, an extra clip for one of them and a knife inside the car.

The next day, a 21-year-old Bangor man told deputies that Richards recently had been staying at his George Street apartment. Richards allegedly told his friend he was tired of being homeless and was going to rob a bank or a store.

If convicted in Penobscot County of the attempted robbery charge, Richards faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
