FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington’s Fitness and Recreation Center has launched its outdoor recreation program, “Mainely Outdoors.”

Currently taking registrations for the summer programming that will begin in July, 2010, “Mainely Outdoors” will offer members of the campus and local community year-round opportunities for participation in a wide array of activities to promote a fit and active lifestyle, to acquaint people with new recreation opportunities and to take advantage of the abundant natural resources in the region.

The program features outdoor recreation clinics, workshops, trips, and other activities. This summer’s schedule includes whitewater-kayaking clinics, flat-water kayaking excursions, biking trips, hiking trips, whitewater rafting and a fly fishing clinic for women.

Whitewater-kayaking clinics are planned throughout July and will feature youth clinics (ages 10-17) Tuesdays, from July 6-27; and adult clinics Thursdays, from July 8-29. Guided flat-water kayaking excursions will include trips to: Wilson Lake, July 14; Porter Lake, July 28; Clearwater Lake, Aug. 11; and Belgrade Lake, Aug. 25.

Biking trips are planned to the Whistle Stop Rail Trail in Farmington, July 21; Carrabasset River Rail Trail, Aug. 4; and Kennebec River Rail Trail, Aug. 18. Hikes are planned to Bald Mountain in Rangeley, July 31; and Bigelow Mountain, Aug. 21. A whitewater rafting trip is planned on the Kennebec River, Aug. 15. A fly-fishing clinic for women will run in August with specific dates to be announced.
