Two arrested on car burglary charges

Two area men were arrested early Saturday on car burglary and other charges after a resident of Maple Street in Bangor saw them breaking into a car and called police.

Nicholas G. Bailey, 21, of Bucksport and Jacob D. Magaw, 25, of Bangor both were charged with burglary to a motor vehicle and refusing to submit to arrest, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

Edwards said Bailey also was charged with trafficking in dangerous knives, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of burglar tools.

Both suspects were taken to Penobscot County Jail and have been released on bail.

Edwards said the incident that led to the arrests began about 3:15 a.m., when the two men were seen inside the Maple Street complainant’s car. While police were on their way there, the resident reported that suspects had just left and were walking up the street with items taken from the car.

As he approached the area, Officer Taylor Bagley spotted the pair and ordered them to stop. Instead, they ran off, leading Bagley on a foot chase through a series of backyards. After the chase moved to Parkview Avenue, Bagley managed to tackle one of the suspects to the ground, Edwards said. The other suspect then stopped and obeyed the officer’s command to lie down on the ground.

Edwards said Bangor police investigated at least eight vehicle break-ins over the weekend, most of them on the city’s east side. Several items have been recovered and some have been returned to their owners.

Edwards urged residents whose vehicles were burglarized but who did not report the incidents to do so. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
