New Timeout opens in Brewer

BREWER, Maine — Local businessman Robert “Bob” Thomas opened the first Timeout restaurant on South Main Street 34 years ago, and now has opened the Timeout Family Restaurant on Clisham Road, which offers his original pizza recipes and much, much more.

“Everybody remembers the pizza,” Ray Lefebvre, Timeout manager, said Monday. “The menu is still the original Timeout menu with a twist because it’s actually a full-time restaurant with everything from subs, to pizzas, to live lobster.”

The restaurant actually opened in January, with Michael Lucas listed as the owner and Thomas as a silent partner, but that changed at the end of May when Thomas took full ownership, Lefebvre said.

“Bob has stepped forward,” he said.

The 20,000-square-foot facility, which is in the old Show Ring location, is actually three businesses in one — a restaurant, club and event center, Lefebvre said.

“The downstairs is a family restaurant 100 percent,” he said. “There is a sports theme. There are 10 TVs downstairs with sports on all the time. The bartender and servers wear referee shirts [and] there is a lounge down there.

“Upstairs is the Timeout Event Center, which is for birthday parties and weddings” and other gatherings, and features a stage and dance floor, Lefebvre said.

The upstairs area morphs into a nightclub with a full service bar Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

“It’s Club Overtime, but we’re calling it the ‘OT,’” the manager said.

Thursdays are set aside for karaoke and designated as ladies night; Friday nights are for country and rock ‘n roll music; and Saturdays feature hip-hop music, Lefebvre said.

“With 600 square feet, we have the largest dance floor in the Bangor-Brewer area,” he said.

The location of the Timeout, which is behind Taco Bell on Wilson Street, is its biggest downfall, the manager said.

“It’s difficult to even notice that it’s even there,” Lefebvre said. “I think that’s our biggest problem.”

The owner is planning to install a rooftop sign to attract business, and the manager said he is already hearing from customers that word of mouth about the return of Timeout pizza is working.

“There is a lot of raves about the food,” Lefebvre said.
