Luchini’s 51:56 tops Tour du Lac

     The Tour du Lac 10-mile race celebrated its 35th birthday in Bucksport Saturday, with 65 runners completing the race.

  Ellsworth native Louie Luchini topped them all, completing the difficult course in 51 minutes, 46 seconds, with runner-up Mike Bunker of Rockland finishing 25 seconds back in second, running 52:11.

  Adam Goode of Bangor finished in third place in 55:29, with Orono’s Erik McCarthy taking fourth in 56:32 and Joseph Capehart of Bangor fifth in 57:07.

  Kristine Guaraldo of South Portland was the women’s winner, finishing in 1:05:25.

  Margaret Capehart, Joe’s wife, was the second women’s finisher in 1:14:53 while Michele Gagnon of Ellsworth was third in 1:18:05.

  Rounding out the top five women’s finishers were Julie Brown of Millinocket (1:18:54) and Angela Ewings of Littleton (1:19:10).

  Two men also achieved a milestone as they joined the 200-mile club, finishing their 20th Tour du Lac.

  Larry Deans of Orland was one of them, finishing 21st overall in 1:11:41 while David Bean of Waterville ran 1:24:03 to come in 39th.

  Brian Hubbell of Bar Harbor and John Tjepkema of Orono each completed their 10th Tour du Lac, putting them in the 100-mile club.

  Tjepkema finished 30th in 1:18:47 and Hubbell 36th in 1:21:38.

  Runners from as far away as Tampa and Sarasota, Fla., came for the race, which featured competitors from four different states.

  Rounding out the top 10 overall were Charles Theriault of Newmaprket, N.H., in sixth, Andy Beardsley of Surry in seventh, Graham Pearsall of Dover-Foxcroft in eighth, Tampa’s Larry Smart in ninth and Perry LeBreton of Kenduskeag in 10th.

  RACE NOTEBOOK: Runners will have several races to compete in for the upcoming holiday weekend with the Stonington Six Road race on Saturday in Stonington with Fourth of July races set the next day in Winthrop, Brewer and Sebec Village. The Friends on the 4th 5K starts at 8 a.m. at Norcross Point in Winthrop, the Walter Hunt 4th of July 3K is set for a 10:45 a.m. start at Wilson Street in Brewer, near the Dunkin’ Donuts, and the Sebec Reading Room 4th of July 5K begins at 8 a.m.
