CARIBOU, Maine — A 14-year-old boy from Delaware died Sunday as the result of an ATV accident.

Kyle Hebert of Bear, Del., was traveling with his grandfather Philip Hebert, 62, and two brothers from Madawaska to Caribou on ITS 83, a sanctioned railroad bed trail, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Hebert, who was not wearing a helmet, veered off a straightaway on the trail about 1:45 p.m. and struck some trees, Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the department, said late Sunday afternoon in a press release.

The boy was taken to Cary Medical Center in Caribou, where he was pronounced dead.

Kyle Hebert’s older brother Ryan Hebert, 18, was driving another ATV. Dylan Hebert, 11, was a passenger on his grandfather’s ATV, Turcotte said.

The 14-year-old was driving a 2006 Polaris 800. Speed may have been a factor in the accident, which still is being investigated, according to Turcotte.

Kyle Hebert is the son of Dodi and Danny Hebert of Bear, Del. The parents met family members at the hospital, according to DIF&W. printed on March 24, 2017
