Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse burglarized

By Heather Steeves, BDN Staff

ROCKLAND, Maine — Police are investigating a burglary at the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. The keeper’s house was broken into and souvenirs were stolen after volunteers closed the lighthouse on Sunday night and before the burglary was reported at about noon on Tuesday, according to Rockland police.

Deputy Police Chief Wally Tower said entry was made through a window in the house attached to the tower. Merchandise was taken and a few pieces of glassware were smashed against the rocks along the breakwater.

“It does not appear that they smashed much, fortunately,” Tower said Thursday.

Missing are T-shirts and other memorabilia sold to tourists on the weekends during the summer when the lighthouse is open to the public.

There was no damage to the lighthouse. Police were unsure how much of the inventory was taken. There are no suspects yet.

The case is under investigation by detective Russell Thompson.
