Madawaska’s Acadian Festival schedule, June 24–27

For more than 33 years, the town of Madawaska has celebrated St. John Valley’s rich Acadian heritage, commemorating the arrival of the first Acadian settlers in 1785.

Thursday, June 24

8 a.m.-2 p.m. Gagnon Family Reunion Registration.

Location: Madawaska High School Cafeteria, 7th Ave.

9 a.m. Merchant Sidewalk Sale, Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce, 728-7000

9 a.m.-5 p.m. – Acadian Festival Decorating Contest for Merchants & Residents. Contact the Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce 728-7000. Judging is Thursday, June 24th

10 a.m.- Watermelon Eating Contest, ages 4- adult. Location: Paradis Shop ’n Save, Main Street. Sponsored by Paradis Shop ’n Save.

10 a.m.- 2 p.m. — Quilting Show. Location: Madawaska High School Lobby Sponsor: Madawaska Quilters

12 p.m.-4 p.m.- Bridge Tournament ($6 entry fee per person). Location: Madawaska Elementary School, 11th Ave. Contact: Ann Caron 207-834-3471 Sponsor: Madawaska Bridge Club.

12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.- Charlemagne Tournament ($5 entry fee per person) Location: Senior Citizens Center, Main Street Contact: Pauline Marquis 728-4737

6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.- Official “Opening Ceremony”

6 p.m.- Department of Veterans Affairs (Maine Mobile Veterans Center) through the Caribou Veterans Service Center, more commonly referred to as the Caribou Vet Center.

7 p.m.- Gagnon Talent Show Rehearsal. Location: Madawaska High School Cafeteria. Contact: Adrian Gagnon 728-4802 Sponsor: The Gagnon Family Reunion.

7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.- La Famille LeBlanc (7pc Band). Repertoire of older traditional French songs with: harmonica, accordion, violin and keyboard. Location: Bi-Centennial Park Sponsor: Acadian Festival.

Friday, June 25

8 a.m.-3 p.m. – Gagnon Family Reunion Registration. Register your name, meet family and gather genealogy. Location: Madawaska High School Cafeteria, 7th Ave. Sponsor: Gagnon Family Reunion.

8 a.m.-3 p.m. – Quilting Show. This Club displays impressive handiwork art. Location: Madawaska High School Cafeteria Lobby, 7th Ave. Sponsor: Madawaska Quilters.

9 a.m.-5 p.m. – Town Wide Yard Sale ($10 fee for any participant) Location: Guide Map available @ Chamber of Commerce. Sponsor: Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce 728-7000.

9 a.m.- Merchant Sidewalk Sale. Location: Main Street. Sponsor: Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce 728-7000.

10 a.m.-2 p.m.-“A day of reflection” at Mizpah Afternoon of Tranquility, Mass at 1 p.m.

10 a.m. -3 p.m.- Isaie Martin Acadian Homestead Open House 137 St. Catherine St. Madawaska

10 p.m.–5 p.m. – Meet Our Colors, Art Show / A la decouverte de nos couleurs, Location: Madawaska Chamber of Commerce.

11 a.m. – Northern Maine Medical Center health screening. Location: Bi-Centennial Park Sponsor: Northern Maine Medical Center.

11 a.m.–6 p.m. – Acadian Meal ($10 per person)

Acadian Pot en Pot, Canadian Six-Pates, Fiddle Heads, Salmon Chowder, Ployes and Poor Man’s Pudding. Tickets for sale at Chamber office. (Fraser deliveries available) Location: K C Hall, 16 th Ave. Sponsor: Knights of Columbus.

4 p.m.-8 p.m.- 20th MAINE VOLUNTEERS REGIMENT, Co B, Civil War encampment & living history. Period camp life, music & military displays. Location: Multipurpose building lot, 7th Ave.

6 p.m.–7 p.m. – Bed Race (5 person team) Main Street. Contact: Colin Jandreau to register 728-6103

7 p.m.-7:30 p.m.– First Annual “Tintamarre”

A parade of noise; dress in your best Acadian colored costume, design your craziest mechanical marvel or noise maker and show it off around Main Street. Location: Main Street. Sponsor: Acadian Festival

7 p.m.– Gagnon Talent Show ($5 admission)

10 a.m. – 11:30p.m. – Founding Ceremony & Historic Landing Re-enactment. Our 225th Anniversary, this Festival Tradition remembers the historic 1785 arrival of the Acadians to the St John Valley by “bateaux” and this year honors The Gagnon Family. Horse drawn wagon shuttle, available from the St David Church. Location: Acadian Cross Landing Site, US Route 1 Sponsor: Madawaska Historical Society

10 a.m.–2 p.m. – Treasures of the Valley

Look into the past by watching local artisans at work.

Activities for kids & adults, waterslides (weather permitting) fun bounce houses and much more. Location: Bi-Centennial Park

1 p.m.–2 p.m. Cyrious Movements – Dance routine by Renee Cyr’s students. Location: Bi-Centennial Park

2 p.m.–4 p.m. – Firemen Demonstration Jaws of Life. Location: Bi-Centennial Park

2:30 p.m. – Baby Crawling Contest – Which baby will crawl across that line first! Location: Bi-Centennial Park

3 p.m.–5 p.m.- ‘50s & ‘60s HOP. Get your poodle skirts and dancing shoes ready! Music, Costume contest, Jive contest, Hula Hoop contest and more! Location: Bi-Centennial Park

4:30 p.m.-8 p.m. – Gagnon Reunion Social Hour / Supper. Public is invited, for tickets contact: 728-4802 Deadline for tickets is June 5. Children under 5: free; Age 6-10: $8; Adults: $16. Sunday, June 27

9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. – Gagnon Family Reunion Mass

10:30 a.m. -Madawaska Firemen’s Chicken BBQ – Tickets $8 US – $8 CDN. Location: Madawaska Fire Station, Main Street

1 p.m.- Acadian Festival Parade (Line up at Marden’s parking lot for 12 p.m.)

3 p.m.-7 p.m.- Closing Ceremony – Music: Blue Daniel’s Band. Following the parade, all the event winners will be announced. Location: Bi-Centennial Park

10 p.m.- Fireworks Display. Location: Multi-Purpose Building Lot, 7th Ave.
