Teen swimming with 2 friends drowns in Maine lake

The Associated Press

ARROWSIC, Maine — A teenager has drowned while swimming with friends in a lake in Maine.

The state Warden Service says 19-year-old Jonathan M. Owens and two friends were in Sewell Pond in Arrowsic on Monday afternoon when they tried to swim 200 yards to a dock.

Warden Doug Kulis says they got halfway and turned around to head back to shore. He says Owens started struggling and his friends tried to help him.

The Warden Service was notified. State police divers also were called in. The divers found the teen’s body Monday evening in 10-foot-deep water about 30 feet from shore.

Owens was from Durham. He had been swimming with 21-year-old Westport resident Ryan Dipierro and 22-year-old Alna resident Sean Quinn.

Two people have died on Maine’s inland waters this year. One person is missing.
