Police apprehended a Bangor man just before 1 a.m. today after a clerk reported the suspect had attempted to smuggle beer out of the store in his pants.

Police say the suspect, Stephen Nason of Bangor, was in the store when they arrived, and that Nason removed the beers and then handed over a small bag of marijuana without being asked.

Nason was charged with Class C Felony theft. The police reported that he has two prior convictions and a civil charge of possession of marijuana.

He remains at Penobscot County Jail.
