BANGOR, Maine — Move the lobster and clams over, because Bangor’s getting a heaping helping of Southern-fried rock this summer.

The third of five planned shows in the Bangor Waterfront Summer Concert Series will serve up iconic Southern rock bands Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Charlie Daniels Band as a Thursday twin bill with a twang on Aug. 5.

“If you’re a fan of classic rock or Southern rock or country, this should be a fun show,” said Alex Gray, senior partner and booking agent for Massachusetts-based New England Concerts.

“The goal with this first year of the series is to hit all the bases and be in position where we’re trying every sound market so we know what sells best in the Bangor area.”

The Skynyrd-Daniels doubleheader is sandwiched between Celtic Woman (July 28) and Alan Jackson Freight Train (Sept. 10). Gray is negotiating with several acts for two more concerts.

“Country in Maine is obviously successful, whereas in other [states] it’s not,” said Gray, an Orono native. “But even if you’re just a classic rock fan, you should see this show or at least support it because this [summer series ticket sales] will go a long way toward determining our schedule next year in terms of what works and what doesn’t here.”

Gray — who put in a request and bid for Aerosmith early on before the classic rock supergroup completed its schedule and before Gray could complete negotiations with city officials — is negotiating for at least two more bookings, but will more likely add more.

Gray is close to inking Boston-based rock band Godsmack as well as another big double bill: Tim McGraw and Montgomery Gentry. He is also actively pursuing acts such as David Gray and former Lewiston resident Ray LaMontagne, who are touring together this summer on the Draw the Line Tour, and the Jonas Brothers. Big names such as Nickelback and John Mayer also have been floated.

No

Tickets for Skynyrd and Daniels go on sale Friday at 9 a.m. All Summer Concert Series tickets are available to purchase in person at the Androscoggin Bank Le Colisee box office in Lewiston and Mark’s Music in Brewer, online at www.thecolisee.com, or by phone at 783-2009.

Ticket prices before service-handling charges are $61.50, $51.50, $41.50 and $27.50 (lawn seating).

Handicapped parking, seating and accessibility will be available. To make arrangements for special accommodations, tickets should be ordered by phone.

“With this being a temporary facility, we can be creative,” Gray said. “We’ll have virtually all of Water Street shut down and have 80 parking spaces available with most of them handicapped reserved. Plus, all the outside rows on every section are initially reserved for handicapped patrons.”

Series acts will perform on a large, rented, covered stage on the river side of the railroad tracks on the Bangor waterfront, virtually the same space that the American Folk Festival’s Railroad Stage occupies. All shows are rain or shine.
