LINCOLNVILLE, Maine — Officials are investigating a high-speed chase and crash that sent two people to the hospital Saturday after a Lincolnville police officer tried to stop a motorcycle traveling at speeds estimated at 100 mph.

Officer Brian Lunt was driving down the Atlantic Highway at 4:41 p.m. Saturday when a 2009 Buell motorcycle driven by Andrew Ludwig, 20, of Hope passed him at 79 mph, according to a report from the Lincolnville Police Department.

Lunt turned his lights on but Ludwig “refused to stop,” the report indicated. The motorcycle apparently continued onto Beach Road at speeds reaching 100 mph, Lunt estimated, but when the officer saw that there was a passenger, he stopped his pursuit because of safety concerns.

Lunt lost sight of the motorcycle but kept on driving through the Sleepy Hollow area of town. When he crested a hill he saw a cloud of smoke, according to the police report, and came upon the crashed motorcycle.

Ludwig, who was wearing a helmet, and passenger Ashley O’Brien, 21, of Hope, who was not, had been thrown from the motorcycle and had struck two separate trees.

“When Officer Lunt exited the police cruiser to evaluate the injuries, Ludwig came toward him,” the report read. “Ludwig was ordered to the ground and was secured by Lunt into handcuffs.”

Ludwig and O’Brien were taken by Camden First Aid to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the police report.

Ludwig apparently told Lunt that he wouldn’t stop because the license plates on the motorcycle belonged to another vehicle, the report stated.

He was issued criminal summonses for the Class C felony of eluding an officer and summonses for failure to stop for a police officer, driving to endanger, criminal speed and attaching false plates.

The motorcycle was a total loss, with damage estimated at $6,000, according to the police report.
