Richmond tips Lakers for Western Maine title

Bangor Daily News

STANDISH — Wade Tuttle and Brent Carver both scored on a squeeze bunt by Mike King with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift top-ranked Richmond to a stunning 2-1 victory over No. 2. Greenville in the Western Maine Class D baseball final Wednesday at Mahaney Diamond on the campus of Saint Joseph’s College.

Richmond (14-4) will play Eastern champion Central Aroostook of Mars Hill in Saturday’s state final at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

Greenville, which split a regular-season doubleheader with the Bobcats, ends its season with an 11-5 record.

Greenville took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Alex Jardine walked, reached third base on two wild pitches by King, and scored on a single by Tony DiAngelo.

Greenville pitcher Emerson Sikes (6-1) held Richmond scoreless until the final inning.

Tuttle hit a leadoff single and went to second base when the left fielder slipped on the play.

Carver then hit a bloop single to put runners on first and third, then Carver stole second to put both runners in scoring position.

After a strikeout, King came up and laid down a squeeze bunt the second pitch he saw back to Sikes.

Tuttle scored easily, and when Sikes threw to first base Carver never stopped running and beat the throw home on a close play to score the winning run.

Carver had three of Richmond’s four hits in the game, with two doubles to go with his single.

Sikes struck out six batters and issued one intentional walk for Greenville.

King pitched a three-hitter for Richmond with five strikeouts and five walks.
