MAPLETON – Elsie M. Tompkins, 91, died June 12, 2010, at a Houlton hospital. She was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Evertt, New Brunswick, daughter of George and Clara (Kitchen) Green. She worked for Converse Rubber Co., Presque Isle, as a stitcher, and was a member of Mapleton United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert and Virginia Tompkins of Bradenton, Fla., and Sidney and Nancy Tompkins of Hohenwald, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Simeon MacFarline of Mapleton, who she lived with for 10 years; 19 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Leon, in 1979; a daughter, Patricia Carney; a brother, Fred Green; and two sisters, Billie Nichols and Dora Green. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mapleton United Methodist Church with Murray Boyles officiating. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle.
