New eye care facility open in Bangor

By Andrew Neff, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — If you’re looking for a new optometrist, Dr. David Douglass is ready to add new patients at a new facility opening this week.

After 21 years of providing eye care and optical service at 417 State Street, Dr. Douglass is opening a much more spacious and all-inclusive location, across from St. Joseph’s Medical Park, at 955 Broadway in Bangor.

“We really needed more room to expand. It’s gone right through the roof over the years and I can’t get people in as quickly as I’d like to as far as patients,” Dr. Douglass said. “My old space was roughly 1,000 square feet and I was renting another 3,000 feet across the hall. We’ve been in three different buildings for the optometry and optician services.

“Our new place is a whole lot bigger with 7,100 square feet and it’s all in one location.”

It’s also much more modern and less congested, having been built fully to current ADA and bariatric (larger-sized or obese people) standards.

“Dr. Dave” bought the lot for his new building last July and broke ground in November. He said there will be an “official grand opening” and ribbon cutting ceremony later on this month as well as an open house July 22 (3-7 p.m.), but the new facility will be open to patients at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Eye Center Optical, which wife Kay Douglass manages, and Eye Center Northeast will also expand operating hours after associate Jennifer Robichaud, a former job shadowing intern while doing her undergraduate work at the University of Maine, joins the staff Aug. 17.

“I’m able to have much better patient flow with eight exam rooms and four pre-testing rooms, as well as space for my clinical research,” said Douglass, who is also clinical director for Special Olympics. “I also have an area just for contact lens care and lessons. My eyewear shop is much more easy to get around in too and the parking is so much better.”

Depending on the day, current office and eye shop hours begin as early as 7:30 a.m. and continue as late as 6 p.m.

Current or prospective patients can make appointments or find out more information by calling the new office number at 990-4388 or the optical center at 942-1947.
