MACHIAS, Maine — An Addison man turned himself in at the Machias Police Department on Friday night after a five-hour search by police.

Belin Sonthonax, 27, was arrested and charged with assault.

Sonthonax was sought in the Machias, Addison and Harrington area after an incident in Machias in which Sonthonax and a female argued, according to Machias police Officer Richard Strout.

The woman reported to police that she was assaulted and that Sonthonax had made threatening comments about several of his family members.

Machias police, Maine State Police, and members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency participated in the search.

Initial reports that Sonthonax was armed with a .22-caliber handgun were not true, Strout said.

Strout said the victim did not require medical treatment and the incident remains under investigation.
