ROCKLAND, Maine — Incumbent Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison has received the Democratic nomination for sheriff over Thomaston police officer Tim Hoppe, according to unofficial election results.

With more than 95 percent of precincts reporting, Dennison got about 75 percent of the votes.

Dennison of St. George said her platform includes cracking down more heavily on drug crime, getting a drug-sniffing dog, and obtaining money to expand the county law enforcement facilities.

Dennison was elected to office in November 2006 after working in multiple county law enforcement positions, including as a corrections officer, dispatcher, patrol person and investigator.

Hoppe, also of St. George, got about 25 percent of the votes. He wanted to instate a 24-hour policing cycle without increasing the county budget, increase communication among police agencies and get all law enforcement in Knox County on the same computer system.

Dennison will be back on the ballot in the November election against Jeffrey Gallagher an unenrolled candidate, and Michael Phillips, a Republican.
