ELLSWORTH, Maine — An Ellsworth woman faces multiple charges after she allegedly stole a check from the local UPS Store and used funds from the check to purchase a vehicle.

Detective Dottie Small of the Ellsworth Police Department arrested Dawn Kennedy, 26, on Monday on charges of felony theft and forgery. According to Small, Kennedy is a former employee of the UPS Store on High Street in Ellsworth. She had returned a piece of equipment to the store’s office where the checks were kept.

When Kennedy took the equipment to the office, Small said, she took a check in the amount of $11,250 and deposited it in a family member’s bank account. She then wrote a check from that account and used the funds to obtain a loan to purchase a vehicle from a Bangor dealership, Small said. The 2010 Mazda 6 that Kennedy allegedly purchased has been recovered.

UPS employees discovered that the business account was short of funds and contacted the bank, Small said. They found the forged UPS check and also obtained bank video of Kennedy depositing the check.

According to Small, Kennedy also was charged with theft last month after she allegedly stole two deposits from the KFC shop where she had been employed.

Kennedy was arrested on the most recent charges and taken to the Hancock County Jail. She was later released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Hancock County Superior Court on July 23.

According to Small, the case remains under investigation and other charges are pending.
