BRUNSWICK, Maine — The last squadron to leave Brunswick Naval Air Station is coming back to Maine. But the sailors are having to fly into other airports instead of the runways in Brunswick.
Sailors from Patrol Squadron 26 arrived Monday night at Portland International Jetport. Their P-3 Orion couldn’t land in Brunswick because the runways already have been shut down.
Base spokesman John Ripley says some sailors already returned from a six-month deployment to deployment to El Salvador, Italy and the Horn of Africa, and more will be returning over the next few days.
The sailors will be wrapping their affairs before moving to the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Florida. The Brunswick base is due to close next May.
