Will American support for Israel begin to wane?

The video of Israeli commandos intercepting a Turkish ship reportedly bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza has inflamed the passions of both supporters and critics of

Israel. Most Americans – 59 percent in a recent poll – remain supportive of Israel, a level that has held steady over the last two decades. Will Israel’s handling of Gaza and Palestinians in general weaken that support? Why are Americans so supportive of Israel?

Does that support lie in the nation’s predominant Judeo-Christian beliefs? Or do Americans side with Israel as an ally against Muslim extremism? Did the 9/11 attacks solidify American support for Israel?
