Maine girl eliminated in national spelling bee

Seventh-grader Lily A. Jordan, 13, of Cape Elizabeth failed to make the semifinals Thursday afternoon in the 2010 Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Jordan, a student from Cape Elizabeth Middle School, was the only representative from Maine in the National Spelling Bee this year. She correctly spelled “taipan” in the first round and “vacatur” in the second round Thursday afternoon, earning points for each correctly spelled word.

Judges at the end of the day Thursday tallied each speller’s points and named 50 semifinalists who will compete today. The championship spell-off will be held tonight.

There were 273 competitors this year.

Jordan was sponsored by Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram in Portland.
