Monster Jam brings drive back to Maine

BANGOR, Maine — A 30-year-old Berwick man will join other monster truck drivers Thursday at Speedway 95 for the kickoff of the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam Truck Show.

Kyle Chandler is the driver of Dominator, one of five trucks that will participate in three-day Monster Jam going on June 3-5. He said Dominator is the only Maine truck that will be at the event and he is excited to be driving in Bangor again after two years absent from events in the state.

“This is pretty much the only time that I’m in the state of Maine,” Chandler said on Wednesday.

The trucks Grave Digger, Black Stallion, Iron Warrior and Instigator will join Dominator this weekend.

He said Dominator is doing excellent and has a new paint job to go with its new sponsorship by Toyota. Chandler doesn’t drive in Maine a lot because he travels with Monster Jam, which operates events in other states and even in places as far away as Israel.

Chandler, who has driven tracks at Oxford, Wiscasset and other raceways, said he grew up racing at Beach Ridge. He started racing at age 20, according to the Monster Jam website, and he said he has been racing for 10 years.

“We get quite a few e-mails [from fans], especially this time of the year,” said Chandler, who has driven seven or eight times in Maine. He lives in Berwick with his wife and two dogs.

Thursday’s event will begin at 6 p.m. and go until 7:30 p.m. with a pit party at 4:30 p.m. The event will continue Friday at the same times. It will end Saturday with a dual event from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. with a pit party from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. General admission is $18 for adults and $8 for children, with an extra $2 for tickets pur-chased the day of the show.
