ROME, Maine — Embers from a campfire are being blamed for a fire on an island in an inland Maine lake in the town of Rome on Memorial Day.

Rome Fire Chief Gary Foss tells the Portland Press Herald about 15 firefighters from Rome, Mount Vernon and Belgrade used boats to reach Blueberry Island in Long Pond and extinguish the fire.

Foss says no one lives on the privately owned island, but the owners saw several men on the island Sunday who had a campfire. They were asked to put the fire out and leave.

Foss says the men apparently tried to put out the fire, but a hot ember likely reignited.

The fire was reported Monday morning.
