JONESPORT, Maine — Larry Finnegan of Jonesport has announced his candidacy as a Democrat for the Maine House of Representatives seat in District 33.

District 33 includes Steuben, Milbridge, Cherryfield, Harrington, Columbia, Columbia Falls, Addison, Jonesport and Beals.

Finnegan is a U.S. Navy veteran and worked for the U.S. Bureau of the Census as a computer analyst, geographer and most recently as a local enumerator on the 2010 Census. During the 1980s, he worked for the United Nations in Santiago, Chile, and later started and ran a successful landscaping and nursery business for 10 years, retiring in 2004.

He serves as a volunteer and board member for several nonprofit, charitable organizations.

Finnegan said in a prepared statement that the No. 1 issue for the area is the economy.

“The population of Washington County is about the same as it was in 1980, young adults and families continue to leave the area to find work; the local schools are emptying out,” he said. “Leaders in the area need to do more to create new businesses and jobs so that children in the area can find good jobs here at home instead of leaving.”

Finnegan said other critical issues are school funding and issues surrounding lobstering and the fisheries.

Finnegan may be reached at 598-5964 or larry@mgemaine.com.
