Assault victim remembered as fun-loving, talkative

WESTBROOK — A college student who was killed in a violent assault in downtown Portland is being remembered as fun-loving, talkative and charming.

About 200 people turned out Saturday at St. Hyacinth’s Church in Westbrook for the funeral of 24-year-old Eric Benson.

According to the Portland Press Herald, family and friends told mourners that Benson’s happiness was infectious and that he had a love of fixing up and racing old cars.

Police say Benson died May 23 after a 20-year-old Gray man allegedly punched him in the face without provocation in Portland’s Monument Square after the bars had shut down in the city’s Old Port area. Benson’s head hit the ground when he fell and he died a short time later at Maine Medical Center.

William Googins of Gray has been charged with manslaughter.
