Ceremonies slated at veterans cemeteries

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Veterans Services has announced schedules for Memorial Day ceremonies taking place at Togus National Veterans Cemetery and the state-owned veterans cemeteries within the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery System. Maine Veterans’ Cemeteries in Augusta on Mount Vernon Road and Civic Center Drive as well as the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery in Caribou will hold ceremonies on Memorial Day.

Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery — Mount Vernon Road, Augusta:

A wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled to begin at noon Monday, May 31. The ceremony is sponsored by the Maine Veterans’ Coordinating Committee. Linda Laweryson will be the master of ceremonies. Invocation and benediction will be given by LTC Andrew Gibson of the Maine Army National Guard. Wreaths will be laid in remembrance of those buried at the cemetery. Patriotic music will be provided by the 195th Maine Army National Guard. The Maine Select Honor Guard will provide a rifle salute and taps. Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery — Civic Center Drive, Augusta:

A ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Monday, May 31. The ceremony is sponsored by the Maine Veterans’ Coordinating Committee. Gary Laweryson will be the master of ceremonies. Keynote speakers will be a representative from Sen. Susan Collins and Rep. Mike Michaud. Invocation and benediction will be given by LTC Andrew Gibson of the Maine Army National Guard. Wreaths will be laid in remembrance of those buried at cemetery. Posting of the colors will be done by the veterans organizations. The Maine Select Honor Guard will provide a rifle salute and taps. Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, 37 Lombard Road, Caribou:

A Memorial Day ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Monday, May 31. The ceremony is sponsored by Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Corp. The keynote speaker is Leo Kieffer. The guest speakers include representatives from Sen. Olympia Snowe’s office, Sen. Susan M. Collins’ office and Rep. Mike Michaud’s office. The Madawaska American Legion Post 147 will conduct a 21-gun salute. Taps will be played by Fred Ormezzani of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Committee. National Cemetery at Togus:

A wreath-laying ceremony will take place in the west cemetery section at 8 a.m. Attendees should meet at 7:45 a.m. in the big parking lot next to Building 205.
