UMaine eliminated by Binghamton

    VESTAL, N.Y. — Binghamton’s Mike Augliera scattered eight hits in a complete-game performance Thursday as the Bearcats ended the University of Maine’s season with a 6-0 victory at the America East Baseball Championship.

The top-seeded Bearcats (31-19) advance to Friday’s 11 a.m. elimination game against the loser of Thursday’s Stony Brook-Albany game.

The Black Bears close out the season at 34-22 after making their first postseason appearance since 2007.

Augliera struck out 11 and walked two as UMaine was shut out for the only time during the 2010 season.

Binghamton scored four runs in the top of the first inning off UMaine starter A.J. Bazdanes (7-5) to provide Augliera all the support he would need.

Jim Calderon and Joel Stubbs doubled and singled to pace the Bearcats, who got a two-run home run from Dave Ciocchi in the first inning.

Senior Joe Mercurio doubled and singled to lead the Black Bears, who left nine men on base.

Junior Matt Jebb was outstanding in relief for UMaine, allowing only five hits and one run in 7 2/3 innings.

    Top 9th: Binghamton held scoreless for the sixth straight inning, but the 6-0 lead stands up.

Bottom 8th: UMaine gets a Joe Mercurio single, but nothing else. Black Bears are down to their last three outs, trailing 6-0.

Top 8th: Bearcats held in check again by Matt Jebb, but have 6-0 lead.

Bottom 7th: Black Bears manage a Justin Leisenheimer single, but do not score.

Top 7th: Binghamton retired in order.

Bottom 6th: Bears do not capitalize on Joe Mercurio’s one-out double. Binghamton on top 6-0.

Top 6th: Binghamton set down 1-2-3.

Bottom 5th: Michael Fransoso’s single leads to nothing more, Bears trail 6-0.

Top 5th: Bearcats don’t score after a two-out single, but lead 6-0.

Bottom 4th: Bears draw a leadoff walk, but double play keeps them in check. Binghamton on top 6-0.

Top 4th: UMaine keeps Binghamton off the board, still trails 6-0. 

Bottom 3rd: Bears get a two-out single, but do not score. Bearcats on top 6-0.

Top 3rd: Binghamton scores again, pushes lead to 6-0.
   Bottom 2nd: UMaine gets leadoff singles from Joey Martin and Tyler Patzalek, but can’t get any runs. Binghamton leads 5-0.

Top 2nd: Bearcats add a run, lead 5-0. America East Player of the Year Corey Taylor is hit in the face by a pitch from UMaine’s A.J. Bazdanes with one out and has to leave the game. Bazdanes is lifted in favor of Matt Jebb. Bases now loaded.

Bottom 1st: The Bears get a baserunner, but do not score. Binghamton leads 4-0.

Top 1st: Binghamton scores four times off A.J. Bazdanes; UMaine coming up

Maine is the home team in this game.

Game time temperature expected to be near 80 degrees, with highs expected to reach into the low 80s.

UMaine sophomore righthander A.J. Bazdanes (7-4) will oppose Binghamton sophomore righty Mike Augliera (5-2).

Binghamton is without first-team sophomore outfielder Henry Dunn, who has been ruled academically ineligible for the postseason.
