Maine oil booms going to the Gulf of Mexico

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Department of Environmental Protection says more than two miles of its oil spill containment booms are going to the Gulf of Mexico to help with cleanup efforts of the massive oil spill there.

The DEP says it has prepared 13,900 feet of boom for BP as the energy giant continues trying to stop an oil gusher that has spewed millions of gallons of oil in the past five weeks.

The agency says BP has arranged for transportation crews to pick up the booms Thursday from DEP facilities in Portland and Bangor.

A DEP spokeswoman told the Portland Press Herald the agency is still awaiting a response to its offers to send other equipment and trained personnel to the Gulf to assist with the spill.
