PORTLAND, Maine — A 20-year-old man charged in a fight that left another young man dead is due in court.

William Googins of Gray is scheduled for a court appearance Wednesday on aggravated assault charges in the attack on 24-year-old Eric Benson early Sunday in Portland’s Monument Square.

Police say the men had words after someone insulted a woman with Benson. Police said Googins then punched Benson, who fell to the pavement and died hours later at Maine Medical Center. The Maine medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that Benson died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Benson was a Westbrook High School graduate who was studying geochemistry at the University of Maine in Farmington. He was due to graduate in December.
