Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. seeking legislation to generate renewable power

SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick – Nova Scotia-based Emera Inc. is hoping for legislative change in Maine that would pave the way for its subsidiary interests in the state to generate power from renewable sources such as wind.

In 2000, Maine restructured its electricity industry and while electric utilities continued to transmit and distribute power to customers, they were no longer permitted to generate the electricity. The rationale for the change was to allow competition for energy supply.
