Was George Smith a friend to the Maine outdoors?

George Smith, long-time executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, has announced his retirement. Mr. Smith was a key player at the State House whenever changes to laws on trapping, gun ownership, hunting, fishing and land access were

considered. Many in the fin and feather group laud him as an effective advocate. Others see him as a divisive figure who was reluctant to compromise or concede that those who do not hunt or fish have valid concerns. Did he win friends for the hook and bullet crowd? Or did he alienate more than he won over? Should his successor work to find more common ground with non-consumptive outdoor enthusiasts, or stick to his or her

guns (pardon the pun)?
