FREDERICKSBURG, Va., and CHERRYFIELD – Laurie Ellen Michie died unexpectedly May 4, 2010, at her home in Fredericksburg, Va. Laurie was born Nov. 17, 1957, in Louisville, Ky., daughter of Philip and Peggy Timmons Michie. Laurie graduated from Narraguagus High School in 1976. She attended Wheelock College for two years, where she participated in a Scandinavian seminar in Denmark. She later graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. As an undergraduate, Laurie interned in the office of Sen. George Mitchell. Laurie’s career in flood mitigation programs spanned more than 20 years in Greater Washington, D.C. At the time of her death, she was a branch chief for the Department of Homeland Security. Laurie is survived by her mother, Peggy of Bangor; a sister, Pamela Caine of Bar Harbor and husband, Brian; a brother, John of Levant and wife, Lela; several nieces, nephews and their children. Laurie was predeceased by her father, Philip; and her infant sister, Marie Constance. A memorial service was held May 9 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, Va.
