APPLETON, Maine — An Appleton couple was rescued safely Tuesday after floating in chilly pond water for about 30 minutes after their sailboat capsized.

David Ober, 54, of Appleton, an experienced sailor, was turning his approximately 16-foot-long sailboat toward his cottage on Sennebec Pond when the wind tipped the boat over just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to Deputy Mark Tibbetts at the Knox County Sheriff’s Department.

Tibbetts said Wednesday Ober and his wife, Janice Ober, 54, were wearing life vests.

The couple were “quite a ways out,” Tibbetts said.

No one was injured.

Maine State Police and Union Fire Department personnel paddled a boat to the pair and brought them to shore safely.

Tibbetts, who lives nearby, later launched his fishing boat and towed the capsized sailboat to shore.
