Spirit of the Moores

By George S. Chappell, Special to the BDN

George watched over the Moores of Port Clyde
reminding them to close the Mud Room door
even when his eyes no longer saw.
Now his black Lab spirit hovers to fly
to Hilton Head for winter,

too sick to make the trip in life;
he waited to succumb
until after the family came home
giving Don, Suzy and daughter Leslie
a nuzzle before sighing on his rug.

Although George is dead, his gentle spirit
will be with the Moores forever
giving guidance as the Great Dog –
which used to lumber up the path –
now the essence of the George that was.

George Chappell of Camden is a longtime Maine journalist and now a creative writing student.
