AUGUSTA, Maine — The highest honor in the national workplace wellness community will be given to a Maine company as part of the Wellness Council of Maine’s annual recognition event on May 25.

This year, WLCME will present the pinnacle of well workplace awards, Platinum, to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Nationally, only 15 companies currently hold the three-year Platinum designation, and three of those programs are in Maine; EMMC joins Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine and Cianbro. Anthem re-ceived its designation in 2009, while Cianbro got its second Platinum designation in 2009.

“We are so pleased to have EMMC’s commitment to employee wellness recognized by the Wellness Council of America,” said Deborah Carey Johnson, RN, EMMC president and CEO, in a press release.

The additions to the list of America’s healthiest companies are being recognized at the Well Workplace Awards Celebration Dinner on May 25 at the Senator Inn in Augusta.

In all, 13 Maine companies will receive Well Workplace Awards from the Wellness Council of America, or WELCOA, a national non-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting healthier lifestyles for all Americans, especially through health promotion initiatives at the work site. The state chapter of the organization, The Wellness Council of Maine, which is a program of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, will present the awards at the annual banquet.

The awards program recognizes organizations that have built successful wellness programs, as defined by WELCOA’s benchmarks, which include a rigorous set of criteria. Over 1,000 corporations, healthcare systems, public agencies and educational institutions in the U.S. have met those criteria and been recognized as some of America’s healthiest companies.

Besides the Platinum award being given to EMMC, Gold awards will be presented to Affiliated Healthcare Systems, Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital, Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems Home Office, Inland Hospital, Maine Department of Transportation, SAD 22, Occupational Medical Consulting, Sargent Corporation, Se-basticook Valley Hospital, The Aroostook Medical Center and The Jackson Laboratory. A Small Business award will be received by Northeastern Log Homes of Kenduskeag. Other awards include The Irv Marsters Wellness Champion Awards, presented to Hannaford Bros. and, in the individual category, Laurie Jones Mitchell from MaineHealth for their demonstrated leadership in the realm of workplace wellness.

The Well Workplace Awards Celebration Dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, May 25, at the Senator Inn. Frank A. Johnson, executive director, State of Maine Office of Employee Health & Benefits, is the keynote speaker.

Tickets to the celebration are still available. For more information on the dinner or the Well Workplace program, contact Jaime Laliberte, Director, Wellness Council of Maine, Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce at (207) 947-0307.
