Helmlinger, LaBell repeat as champs at Sugarloaf Marathon

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Gabriel Helmlinger of Cambridge, Mass., won the Sugarloaf Marathon for the second consecutive year Sunday in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 47 seconds, nearly four minutes faster than his winning time from 2009.

Amanda LaBelle, 26, of Rockland repeated as the women’s champion with a time of 3:02.21.

Louie Luchini of Ellsworth captured he Sugarloaf 15K in 46:12.2 while Carry Buterbaugh of South Portland repeated as the women’s champion with a time of 59.5.

Helmlinger and LaBelle managed to reclaim their titles against the largest field of competitors in the 28-year history of the marathon, with 379 runners starting the race.

The 15K also hosted the largest field of competitors ever, with 354 registered runners. Runners enjoyed ideal weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from the low 40s to the low 60s and bright sunshine throughout the race.

The 43-year-old Helmlinger finished with one of the fastest times of his career on a marathon course that is ranked as one of the top 15 fastest in the country, and finished more than eight minutes ahead of runner-up Erik McCarthy of Orono, who completed the course in 2:38.49.

Rounding out the top five were David Herr of Canaan, Vt. (2:43.38), Jonathan Goupee of Brewer (2:49.15), and Bruce Rosvall of Rothesay, New Brunswick (2:49.28).

LaBelle took the women’s title handily, beating second-place finisher Terri Ladka of Marshfield, Mass., by nearly 20 minutes. Ladka finished in 3:21.14.

Also finishing in the top five were Merrily Welch (3:25.54) of Temple, Damaris Hoeman of Woburn, Mass., (3:25.56) and Melissa Poulin of Union (3:26.11).

Trailing Luchini and placing in the top five in the men’s 15K were Robert Gomez of Westbrook (47:47.7), Humberto Rodriguez of Manchester, N.H. (51:39.7), Joe Capehart of Bangor (52:38.4) and Tom Ryan of Cape Elizabeth (55:18).

Also placing in the top five behind Buterbaugh in the women’s 15K were Jeanne Hackett of Scarborough (1:01.38), Heidi Nadeau of North Hampton, N.H. (1:01.45), Patty Blanchard of Dieppe, New Brunswick (1:04.06), and Heather Russo-Littlefield of Block Island, R.I. (1:04.16).
