CARIBOU, Maine — A local teenager who led police on a high-speed chase through the outskirts of the city and rammed a police cruiser in an effort to get away was arrested late Saturday night and booked on several charges.

Police said the incident began just before midnight, when police received a call about a vehicle being operated erratically. Officer Doug Bell responded to the complaint and came upon a vehicle being operated by Jason Boyd, 19, of Caribou.

Bell attempted to get Boyd to stop, but he allegedly refused and attempted to outrun the police. Bell said that he pursued Boyd, who allegedly reached speeds as high as 90 mph with his vehicle during the chase and, at times, was driving on the wrong side of the road.

The chase ended a short time later on South Main Street in the city, when Boyd allegedly whipped his vehicle around and started to drive toward Bell’s cruiser. Police said Bell tried to avoid Boyd’s oncoming vehicle, but Boyd reportedly rammed the front end of the cruiser with his car in an attempt to flee.

After he hit Bell’s cruiser, he hit a guardrail, veered into a ditch and struck a telephone pole. Neither Bell nor Boyd were seriously injured.

Boyd was arrested and charged with eluding an officer, operating under the influence of drugs, reckless conduct and criminal speed.

He was taken to the Aroostook County Jail, where he remained Sunday afternoon.

Maine State Police troopers assisted at the scene. Bell’s cruiser was heavily damaged and is inoperable, according to police.
