PORTLAND, Maine — Maine author Phillip Hoose advised nearly 900 University of Southern Maine graduates to learn from rejection, be adaptable — and unplug their laptops.
Hoose, who received an honorary degree at the school’s commencement ceremonies at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday, advised the graduates to take time off from work. He led the audience in a rendition of the song, “Bring Back the Eight Hour Day.”
About 1,200 graduates were to receive degrees from USM on Saturday.
House Speaker Hannah Pingree was scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the University of Maine at Farmington’s graduation ceremony. More than 400 graduates are taking part in Saturday’s commencement.
