Fire destroys LaGrange home

By Meg Haskell, BDN Staff

LAGRANGE, Maine — A local family was left homeless Friday night by a fast-moving fire that destroyed their older mobile home on Trailside Lane.

“Flames were already coming through the walls and out the windows and out the doors” when fire crews arrived shortly after 7:30 p.m. at the home on Merry Lane, said LaGrange Fire Chief Joseph Baker on Saturday.

The trailer home was located near several others on a narrow unpaved road off Route 16, making access by tanker trucks difficult, he said.

Lane, who was seriously injured about two weeks ago in an ATV accident and remains hospitalized in Bangor, was not at home at the time of the fire.

But her adult son, who lives with her, was cooking fiddleheads in the kitchen and had stepped outside for a minute, according to family friend Amanda Grant.

“When he came back in, the stove was on fire,” Grant said. The son and a friend rescued two cats and had to break down the back door of the trailer to get out safely.

“They lost everything,” she said.

Grant said friends are seeking donations of clothing and household goods to help the family get back on its feet. She may be reached at 385-3053.

Baker said the mobile home is a total loss and was uninsured.

Firefighters from neighboring Alton assisted the LaGrange crew in battling the blaze, which was fully extinguished by 10 p.m.
