BREWER, Maine — Nothing, not even the stomach flu, could stop Sam Bedore on Friday night.

When the Bangor High School senior wasn’t blowing fastballs past Brewer hitters, she was showcasing some power with the bat as well.

Bedore fashioned a one-hit masterpiece with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while blasting a two-run home run to key a four-run fifth inning as the undefeated Rams blanked the rival Witches 5-0 at Coffin Field.

Bedore’s home run, a towering shot over the center field fence, came as somewhat of a surprise to the Rams’ ace for a couple of reasons.

“It [the pitch] was pretty high. I had trouble swinging at high pitches the entire game, so I guess I just got lucky on that one,” said Bedore.

The 1-0 delivery from Brewer senior Amanda Ryan was fairly high — it was only at Bedore’s eyes, and she tomahawked a ball that cleared the fence with ease.

“She checked-swung, snapped it and it went out, so that was amazing,” said Brewer coach Skip Estes, whose team had won four straight games entering Friday’s play and fell to 5-4.

The Rams (10-0) reached Ryan for a run in the first, as Kim Jordan worked a one-out walk and came around on Hannah Lust’s sharp single to the right-center field gap.

Lust was gunned down trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Ryan did settle down a bit, and kept her team in striking distance with eight strikeouts over the first four innings, keeping the Rams off-balance with a blend of high fastballs.

“Amanda pitched a very good game. She looked like she had a plan of throwing upstairs with us quite a bit and starting out early [in counts],” Stanhope said.

The Rams finally mastered that plan as the game wore on, as they grew more selective at the plate, and it paid off with a four-run uprising in the fifth that essentially put the game away.

“[Ryan] was definitely bringing the high ball. Coach told us to lay off it and wait for a pitch that we wanted,” said Lust, one of three Rams with multiple hits. “We laid of the high ball for the most part and we nailed the fastballs.”

Lust, who went 2-for-4 on the night, drove in the Rams’ second run of the inning with a double down the left field line while Jade Baumrind plated the first one with a bunt single down the first-base line, scoring Megan Doucette, who led off with a triple.

Once the Rams laid off the high fastballs, they started producing more line drives, even on outs.

“[Ryan] definitely did a good job making us chase that high fastball today,” Bedore said. “We had to adjust toward the end of the game. I think personally we had a little trouble timing the ball today.”

That’s not to say Ryan didn’t pitch well, as she did all she could to give the Witches a chance to win.

“I thought she pitched very well tonight, Bangor’s been hot with the bats lately and I think she pitched very well,” Estes said.

Bedore was simply on her game, and the only hit she gave up was Lindsay Houp’s double in the third, and she struck out the last two batters of that inning to extinguish that Brewer threat.

“I was just feeling it tonight. It’s always a good feeling coming to play Brewer, and you’ve just got to get pumped up for it,” Bedore said.

The Rams certainly knew they were going to get the Witches’ best effort.

“You can throw Heal points out the window every time we play and it’s been that way my six years here,” Stanhope said. “Rivalry games are always good.”

The two teams donned pink T-shirts prior to the game to raise awareness for cancer, and raised $633.98 in donations.
