Should Maine create the lieutenant governor post?

Eighteen states have the positions of governor and lieutenant governor elected separately,

so that a Republican can win the governor post and a Democrat can be elected lieutenant governor. In 25 other states, the governor and lieutenant governor are elected as a ticket.

The advantages are that should the governor become incapacitated or go hiking on the Appalachian Trail, the lieutenant governor can take over. Proponents also say the post provides another pathway for higher state and federal office, with voters being able to

evaluate the office holder for their suitability. Should Maine consider adding this post? printed on July 28, 2017
