Maine GOP begins 2nd day of convention

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — It’s Day Two of the Maine Republican convention, and participants will hear from each of the seven GOP candidates for governor.

Les Otten, Bruce Poliquin, Steve Abbott, Peter Mills, Matt Jacobsen, Paul LePage and Bill Beardsley are seeking to make an impression on the party faithful before the June 8 primary.

Convention co-chairwoman Ruth Summers says about 1,800 people are attending the convention at the Portland Expo.

Republicans are sensing opportunity by Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts and voter discontent over the economy and the Democratic-backed health care overhaul. Sen. Olympia Snowe says the GOP has “the best opportunity in years” to send a Republican governor to Augusta and to add seats in the State House.
